ABOUT BOWEN

The Bowen Center for Health Workforce Research and Policy is named in honor of late Indiana Governor, Otis R. Bowen, M.D., a committed family medicine physician and public servant. Housed within the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Department of Family Medicine, the Center was originally established as the Bowen Research Center in the 1990s and focused on Family Medicine Education research. It was renamed to the Bowen Center for Health Workforce Research and Policy in 2015 to acknowledge a focus and expertise in health workforce policy research. Our name and the work we do honor Dr. Bowen’s commitments and contributions both as a physician and government leader.

The Bowen Center website was developed to enable stakeholders to readily discover, use, and share health workforce information. It provides reliable and timely data on Indiana’s health workforce in order to support data-driven policy development and to inform decisions at both the state and local levels. It is maintained by the Bowen Center for Health Workforce Research and Policy at the Indiana University School of Medicine in collaboration with the state of Indiana.

Since its naming in 2015, the Bowen Center continually strives to be a hub of health workforce data and policy information. Content on our website is informed by and developed for Indiana stakeholders. The Indiana Health Workforce Dashboards are the centerpiece. These dashboards enable users to interact with and customize supply information for Indiana health professions. The Bowen Library centralizes the Center’s entire collection of workforce reports, white papers/briefs, survey tools, and more. The Bowen Center’s portfolio of research projects is diverse and has expanded over the years to include an array of timely and responsive subjects.

Dr. Hannah Maxey is Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Director of the Bowen Center for Health Workforce Research and Policy at the Indiana University School of Medicine. She is a nationally recognized expert in health workforce policy with more than two decades of experience in health care and public health.

Dr. Maxey has been a licensed dental hygienist in Indiana for over 20 years. She spent nearly a decade practicing in federally qualified health centers in Indianapolis operated by the Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) prior to pursuing a Master of Public Health in Health Policy and Management (2011), and a Doctor of Philosophy in the same area (2014). Her experience as a practicing health care professional in public health clinics provided perspective on the intersection and relationship between health care and public health, as well as the critical role of the health workforce in ensuring availability and accessibility in both public health and health care services.

Dr. Maxey has been actively engaged in supporting and leading state level health workforce initiatives in Indiana since 2014. She was appointed as the Representative of Health Care Workforce Initiatives on the Governor’s Public Health Commission in 2021, she served as a health workforce expert on the Governor’s Health Workforce Council since 2015.
