Medical schools across the country have reported challenges finding clinical training sites and qualified physician preceptors. These physicians guide medical students and residents through supervised, hands-on training.
The Bowen Center for Health Workforce Research and Policy's new brief examines Indiana's physician preceptor workforce using 2025 licensure renewal data. Among 19,789 actively practicing physicians, 3,423, or 17.3%, reported serving as preceptors. Approximately 58% practice in eight counties, while 12 counties have none reported.
This brief presents participation by specialty and county-level distribution to inform discussions about clinical training opportunities and Indiana's healthcare workforce pipeline.
