Professional regulation is an important topic for policy discussions. The keys to each license profession is held by one or more entities. This is a usually a good thing, as it protects the public from people without the skills to be true professionals. On the other hand, when there are too many regulations, it can create unnecessary hurdles to capable professionals to start practicing, leading to statewide supply issues.↵↵The other thing to note about licensing agencies, is that they are wealthes of data on their professionals. Practice status, location, hours worked, are all data points that could be collected during professional re-licensing. This data can be used at a state level to form policy and inform the state on how many skilled professionals they have.↵↵In Indiana, we are lucky to have robust means of data collection, thanks to SEA 223. SEA 223 mandates surveys to be administered at the time of license renewals for some professions. Below you can find a table of Health Professions, who regulates them, and if they’re included in SEA 223.
